I’m about to break one of my rules with this post but here goes.

Once you have planned your blog, and started your blog you need to really think about the things you are going to write. Actually you’ve probably already done that so lets look at something you are probably overlooking.

It’s all good and well to have great posts, but what is going to draw people in? The title.

Titles are powerful things, and I’d say probably even more important to the growth of your blog than any other item. Why are these so important?

People are going to find your site via:

  • digg
  • reddit
  • stumbleupon
  • google
  • yahoo
  • rss readers

The first thing people will see is your title & it needs to be catchy. I’m working hard to sculpt my titles so they are more effective at grabbing people and pulling them in.

I have a few rules I’ve put together to help create better titles.

  • Don’t give it all away: your title needs to give the user enough of a tasty morsel to hook them, not enough to tell them the answer. This is the rule I’m breaking with the title of this post.
  • Sensationalize: don’t lie, but feel free to exaggerate. Take a look at how magazines create their cover page headlines. This is a trick that Brain Clark calls “Cosmo Headlines” over at copyblogger.com
  • Numbers & Lists: people love stats and figures. Lists are a great way to write posts and titles starting with numbers are gold for attracting people. 10 ways to earn $1 million dollars
  • How to: often people are looking for a way to perform a task/grow/learn. Tell them how to do this and you’ve got it made. How I made $1 million in 10 mins a day.

My thought is practice, try out your posts on sites like digg.com, reddit.com and stumbleupon.com and learn what titles are working for you. Check as well what search phrases people are using to find your site and tailor your titles to these searches.

Read the paper, read successful blogs, and write, write, write.
